Probuphine: The Buprenorphine Implant

September 21, 2016

The buprenorphine implant is out.  I do not know any physicians prescribing it NC yet.  It is a six month buprenorphine implant that consists of four 26 mm thin rods that are surgically implanted in the inside of the upper arm under local anesthesia (lidocaine).  It only comes in that one dose.  After six months, it must be surgically removed.  If you want another implant for another 6 months, the other arm must be used.  It is recommended only for folks maintained on 8 mg or less a day of buprenorphine.

Many patients like the idea of not having to take a medication every day.  Not being reminded that they have to take a medication every day.   There is less of a chance of relapse with the medication that is already in you for at least 6 months.  You cannot choose to not take your buprenorphine and relapse.  No need for observed compliance means more peace of mind for your loved ones.  I am not sure how much it will cost.  The cost and if it will be covered by insurance may determine how popular it becomes.  It will be interesting to follow.

The physicians at the Morse Clinics are always happy to go over all of your treatment options in detail.  Just schedule with us!
